Biography
Amayo “Uzo” Philips is a filmmaker, writer and producer from Imo State, Nigeria, best known for work in Nollywood. He holds a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Jos. Over the years, he’s built a reputation for creating memorable characters and stories; one of his most famous contributions is directing Aki na Ukwa, the comedy film that introduced characters Chinedu Ikedieze (Aki) and Osita Iheme (Pawpaw) to mainstream Nollywood success. Phillips also made several other films including Sherikoko, The Fighter and Agnetta (O’Mpa). He has worked across genres and blends humor with social commentary in his storytelling. Based in Owerri, he is seen by many peers as one of the respected directors of his generation. His early schooling was at a community secondary school in Awo-Idemili, Orsu LGA, and later he pursued higher education in Jos. In addition to directing and producing, he’s also active as an author and consultant. Philips balances creative work with mentorship and aims to push Nollywood’s boundaries, especially through strong character development and scripts that reflect both humor and human truth.
