Biography

Andy "The Admiral" Kasrils is a British-born South African creative known for his work as a director, writer, DJ, and cultural commentator. Born in exile in the UK to South African parents, he immersed himself in London's ragga scene, learning the art of ragga lyric rap and embracing musical diversity. He studied sound engineering at Kingston University and worked at Mint Jam Records, collaborating with artists like Soul II Soul. In 1994, he returned to South Africa and recorded an album supporting the country's first democratic elections. Kasrils began his radio career on Voice of Soweto, connecting with local kwaito artists and releasing the ragga anthem "Gong de de gong" with Bongo Maffin's Apple Seed. He hosted YFM's Sunday evening ragga show and served as a movie critic on e.tv's "The Phat Joe Show" for four years. As a club DJ, he blended rap and voice to create a unique sound. Kasrils also appeared on SABC3's "Sorted" and was a judge on the third season of "Popstars" in 2004. His multifaceted career reflects a deep commitment to South African culture and media.
