Biography

Benjamin A. "Benny" Burtt is an American supervising sound editor and sound designer. The son of legendary sound designer Ben Burtt (Star Wars), he has carved out his own distinct legacy at Skywalker Sound, becoming the go-to sonic architect for director Ryan Coogler. In January 2026, Burtt received his second Academy Award nomination (Best Sound) for his work on Coogler's gothic horror "Sinners" (2025). As the Supervising Sound Editor, Burtt was tasked with building an immersive 1930s Mississippi soundscape that blurred the lines between diegetic blues music and supernatural horror. Working alongside re-recording mixers Steve Boeddeker and Brandon Proctor, Burtt crafted a "rhythmic" sound design where environmental noises—from insects to steam trains—were cut in tempo with the film’s musical score to reflect the psychological state of the protagonists. Burtt also had a major hand in the sonic identity of the 2025 blockbuster "Jurassic World Rebirth". Having previously provided the vocalizations for the velociraptors (Blue, Charlie, Delta, and Echo) in the original Jurassic World trilogy, he returned to the franchise to help design the "stripped-down, survivalist" audio palette for Gareth Edwards' franchise revitalization. His partnership with Ryan Coogler spans over a decade, having previously earned an Oscar nomination for "Black Panther" (2018) and supervised the sound for "Creed" and "Fruitvale Station". He is known for his ability to blend organic field recordings with stylized effects, a technique he refined starting as an assistant on Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.
