Biography
Chande Omar is a Tanzanian filmmaker and media executive with over 30 years of experience in directing, producing, and editing for television and film. He currently serves as the Director General of Television Zanzibar (TVZ) and is a board member of the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF). Omar's 2015 feature film Aisha garnered critical acclaim, earning him the Best Director award at the 2016 ZIFF and a nomination at The African Film & Arts Festival (TAFF) . The film explores themes of gender, resilience, and social justice. His educational background includes a Master’s in Film Studies from the University of Newcastle, UK, a BA in Visual Arts from the University of Visual Arts in Hamburg, and a Diploma in Journalism from the Tanzania School of Journalism. He has also completed professional training in TV/Film Production in the Netherlands and South Korea. Omar has directed numerous documentaries and dramas focusing on social issues such as HIV/AIDS, women's rights, and youth empowerment. His work has been recognized both locally and internationally, contributing significantly to the Tanzanian film industry.
