Charles Shemu Joyah is a Malawian filmmaker, writer, and producer known for his socially conscious storytelling. Born in Zimbabwe in 1959, he studied mathematics and physics at the University of Malawi and later earned a degree in surveying from the University of East London. Joyah’s films—including Seasons of a Life (2008), The Last Fishing Boat (2012), and The Road to Sunrise (2017)—have garnered international acclaim, with The Road to Sunrise becoming Malawi’s first submission to the Oscars. In 2024, he was honored with France’s Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to cinema. He also mentors emerging filmmakers in Malawi.
