Biography
Ian Mbugua, popularly known as “Judge Ian,” is a Kenyan actor, singer, director, and educator celebrated for his no-nonsense presence as a judge on the talent show Tusker Project Fame. Raised in an artistic environment, he began his career with Phoenix Players—the country’s prominent repertory theatre—where he embraced acting and music from the 1980s, even memorably starring in a classic Copy-Cat advertisement. Beyond performance, Ian has dedicated himself to education, teaching music and drama at Brookhouse International School. He also leads the school’s theatre alongside his work as a performer and director. Ian’s television work includes roles in the film House of Lungula where he played Chris Taylor, and on TV series such as Rush and Single Kiasi. On screen he is known for his sharp, telling critiques; off stage, he’s a mentor, choir member, and doting family man who embraces fatherhood and grandparenting with genuine warmth.
