Lydia Matata is a filmmaker from Nairobi, Kenya, known for her work as a writer, director, and creative producer. She is passionate about creating films that explore issues, experiences, and people that resonate with her. Matata is a writer on Country Queen, Kenya's first drama series on Netflix, and has also contributed as a writer to Igiza on Showmax. Her filmography includes both narrative and documentary shorts. Her short film Sungura screened at the Pan African Film Festival at Cannes and received awards including the Best Extended Cinema Award at the Malatesta Short Film Festival and the Best Women in Film Award at Ghana's Black Star International Film Festival. Her documentary short Utapata Mwingine won the Best Emerging Filmmaker Award at the UN Women's Global Film Festival. Matata's latest documentary, A Conversation Between Two Artists, was filmed in Kenya and Japan as part of a residency by UNESCO and the Nara International Film Festival for African Women Filmmakers. Her first feature film script, Pepo Kali, is currently in development.
