Biography
Nicolas Chevallier is a French-born visual effects supervisor at Framestore. He studied at Supinfocom Valenciennes, following an early academic interest in thermodynamics and applied physics. Chevallier began his career in the industry in 2001 at BUF Compagnie in Paris. There he worked as a CG artist on films such as The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions before rising to CG supervisor and then visual effects supervisor, contributing to major productions including Batman Begins, Silent Hill and Thor. During his time at BUF, he earned a VES Award nomination for his work on Thor. After nearly a decade at BUF, Chevallier spent two years in London working at BlueBolt as a VFX Supervisor, contributing to films such as Snow White and the Huntsman and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. In 2013, he relocated with his family to Montréal to work at MPC, serving as Compositing Supervisor on Into the Woods (2014). In March 2015, Chevallier joined Cinesite in Montréal as a VFX Supervisor. One of his landmark projects was The Revenant (2015). At Cinesite, he led roughly 86 artists across multiple global offices to deliver 138 VFX shots — about 38 minutes of finished film — comprising digital matte paintings, set extensions, fluid and particle simulations, character animation, lighting, CG environments, and compositing. The effort contributed significantly to the film's immersive realism. In 2017, Chevallier moved to Framestore, where he has led numerous projects. His credits there include Now You See Me 2, X‑Men: Apocalypse, Black Sails (TV), Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018), and more family-oriented work such as Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made (2020) and Flora & Ulysses (2021). For Timmy Failure, his team brought to life a photorealistic polar bear character called "Total," blending detailed anatomy, fur, light interaction, and naturalistic behaviour to integrate into the live-action film believably. Throughout his career, Chevallier has earned recognition from his peers. For The Revenant, he won the Visual Effects Society Award (VES) in 2016 for Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature (shared with Richard McBride, Ivy Agregan, Jason Smith and Cameron Waldbauer). He was nominated for a VES Award in 2012 for Thor (Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture, shared with Xavier Allard and Pierre Buffin). Furthermore, his work on Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made garnered a 2021 VES nomination for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode. His contribution to Into the Woods led to a 2015 nomination at the Hollywood Post Alliance Award (HPA) for Outstanding Visual Effects – Feature Film.
