Biography

Rethabile Ramaphakela is a South African filmmaker, producer, director, and writer renowned for her impactful contributions to the television and film industry. She began her career as a KTV presenter before co-founding Burnt Onion Productions with her brothers, Tshepo and Katleho, in 2010. The company has since produced acclaimed projects, including the Netflix Original films Seriously Single and How to Ruin Christmas, as well as the series Bedford Wives and My Perfect Family. Rethabile's work is celebrated for its authentic storytelling and representation of diverse voices. She has received several accolades, such as the South African Film and Television Award for Best Achievement in Screenwriting for a TV Comedy in 2015 and 2019, and was named a "Producer to Watch from Africa" at MIPtv in Cannes in 2019. Beyond her professional achievements, Rethabile is an advocate for greater representation of Black women in film and continues to inspire the next generation of storytellers.
