Alonzo Rico Speight is an American independent filmmaker, digital media artist, and educator known for his socially conscious documentaries that explore African American history, political theory, and the African diaspora. He is a graduate of Boston University and holds a Master of Arts in Film and Television from Emerson College. His career is defined by works that bridge the gap between African and American political struggles. His 1997 documentary "Who's Gonna Take the Weight?"—which examined the parallel lives of youth in South Africa and the US—was screened at the 52nd Cannes International Film Festival. He is currently gaining international attention for his 2025 feature documentary "Rediscovering Fanon", which re-examines the work of philosopher Frantz Fanon in the context of modern American racial justice movements. In addition to filmmaking, he lectures on film production and has served as a television director for CUNY TV in New York.
