Biography

Steve Boeddeker is an Academy Award-nominated sound designer and re-recording mixer, recognized as one of the premier audio craftsmen at Skywalker Sound. With a career spanning over three decades, he is known for his ability to bridge the gap between sound editing and mixing, often serving in dual roles to create cohesive, immersive audio landscapes for directors like Ryan Coogler, J.C. Chandor, and David Fincher. In January 2026, Boeddeker received his fourth Academy Award nomination (Best Sound) for his work on Ryan Coogler’s "Sinners" (2025). Collaborating with the sound team that includes Benjamin A. Burtt and Brandon Proctor, Boeddeker helped engineer the film's "rhythmic horror" aesthetic, where environmental sounds were tuned to match the tempo of the blues-infused score. His mix was praised for balancing the film's quiet, tension-filled moments with its explosive supernatural set pieces. Boeddeker has been a sonic anchor for the Black Panther franchise, previously earning Oscar nominations for both Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing for the original 2018 film. His versatility is further highlighted by his work on the survival drama "All Is Lost" (2013), which relied almost entirely on his sound design to tell the story in the absence of dialogue.
