It is a proud moment for Nigerian cinema as the psychological thriller, The Weekend, officially begins streaming on HBO Max.
Produced by Trino Motion Pictures, this film is breaking new ground by becoming the first independent Nigerian thriller to be picked up by the global streaming platform. After traveling to some of the biggest film festivals in the world, the movie is finally available to subscribers across Central and Eastern Europe, including countries like Poland, Hungary, and Romania.
The story follows a young woman named Nikiya, played by Uzoamaka Power. As an orphan, she is eager to finally meet the family of her fiancé, Luke. However, what should have been a happy introduction quickly turns into a nightmare.
She discovers that her future in-laws are hiding dark secrets and following unsettling traditions that she never saw coming. The film features a fantastic cast, including Meg Otanwa and Bucci Franklin, who bring this tense and mysterious story to life.
Before arriving on streaming screens, The Weekend enjoyed massive success on the international stage. It made history in 2024 as the first independent Nigerian film to premiere at the famous Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
From there, it traveled to the BFI London Film Festival and even won the "Monster Award" for Best Film at the Monsters Fantastic Film Festival. Even at home, the movie was a huge hit, sweeping the Africa Movie Academy Awards with 16 nominations and winning top prizes like Best Film and Best Screenplay.
For the creators at Trino Motion Pictures, this deal with HBO Max is a dream come true. Producer Uche Okocha explained that they always wanted to tell a story that people everywhere could understand and enjoy, even if it is told from a Nigerian perspective.
The fact that a major platform like HBO Max chose the film proves that great stories can travel far beyond their home country. This milestone isn't just a win for one movie; it shows the world that Nigerian filmmakers are creating world-class stories that belong on the global stage.
