The cinemas were hot this past weekend (Sept 26–28). Nollywood showed up in sequins and attitude, Hollywood brought back their ghosts, and anime stans continued their full-time job of shouting “we move!” Here’s how the top 6 movies battled for your popcorn money:
Gingerrr – ₦78.9M / ₦82.8M (New) | CLICK HERE TO SEE MOVIE DETAILS
Forget small talk, this film entered like agbada to a wedding reception. Nearly ₦80M in its first weekend? That’s takeover vibes. The all-woman power squad of KieKie, Bisola Aiyeola, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Wunmi Toriola didn’t just star; they also co-produced it. The plot mixes revenge, sisterhood, and some fine 1920s-style drip that had people dressing up for the premiere like it was Met Gala Lagos. Nollywood said “ginger” and Nigerians answered “say no more!”
One Battle After Another – ₦15.4M (New) | CLICK HERE TO SEE MOVIE DETAILS
This one crept in quietly but still pulled a respectable ₦15.4M. Action, grit, plenty wahala, it gave weekend moviegoers another option if Gingerrr tickets were sold out. It’s basically the underdog of the week: not flashy, but it might grow legs if word spreads.
The Conjuring – ₦15.1M / ₦138.9M (Week 4) | CLICK HERE TO SEE MOVIE DETAILS

Four weeks later and Nigerians are still paying money to go and shout “Holy Ghost fire!” in public. Horror clearly has its loyal stans here. The Conjuring has already made almost ₦139M, proving that we enjoy being scared as long as popcorn is in hand. At this rate, the demons in the movie deserve their own residency in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria (silently whispers GOD FORBID + I BIND & CAST EVERY DEMON WITH THE BLOOD OF JESUS) lol.
Demon Slayer – ₦13.3M / ₦154.6M (Week 3) | CLICK HERE TO SEE MOVIE DETAILS

Anime fans, una dey try. Three weeks in and Demon Slayer has stacked ₦154M. That’s blockbuster money. Who would have thought a Japanese anime would be eating well in Nigerian cinemas? The fanbase is loud, loyal, and apparently, very rich. If you’ve heard random shouts of “Water Breathing” in your streets or area, now you know why.
The Long Walk – ₦4.5M / ₦33.1M (Week 3) | CLICK HERE TO SEE MOVIE DETAILS

This one isn’t sprinting, but it’s walking steadily into respectable numbers. By its third week, it has passed the ₦30M milestone. Call it the quiet achiever, not breaking records, but still pulling people who want drama without all the shouting.
My Father’s Shadow – ₦3.8M / ₦16.8M (Week 2) | CLICK HERE TO SEE MOVIE DETAILS
Two weeks in and still making people shed small tears. This family drama has found its audience, even though it’s crawling compared to the giants on the list. At ₦16.8M, it’s doing okay not setting the world on fire, but sometimes all you need is a steady story and the right crowd.
THE TAKEAWAY
This weekend belonged to Gingerrr, no argument there. But the mix is what makes the box office fun: anime holding its own, horror still cashing out, and Nollywood serving both blockbusters and quiet dramas. Next week, all eyes will be on whether Gingerrr keeps its ginger, or if one of these contenders will rise up to spoil the party.
AUTHORS NOTE
If I'm all about the hype, my money will be on Gingerrr but if not the hype it will be My Father’s Shadow. Not an anime lover so I'd settle for The Conjuring, who doesn't love horror? Or better still pick The Long Walk - One Battle After Another isn't convincing yet so no comments on that.
Which one gets your ticket money next weekend?

Funke Akindele has once again proven her dominance in Nollywood, sweeping all major categories in the 2024 FilmOne box office rankings.
