Hollywood just met its most talked-about newcomer, and she isn’t even human. Tilly Norwood, a 100% AI-generated “actress,” has become the center of a heated debate that’s now spilling across Hollywood and social media.
Created by Dutch comedian and filmmaker Aline van der Velden, Tilly was designed to be the “ultimate girl next door” - charming, relatable, and digitally flawless. Van der Velden, who runs the AI-focused production company Particle 6, says she sees artificial intelligence as a new creative tool, not a threat. But Hollywood isn’t so sure.
When news broke that talent agents were competing to sign the virtual actress, several real-life stars voiced outrage. Actress Melissa Barrera called the idea “gross,” urging industry insiders to “read the room.” Critics argue that signing an AI performer undermines human creativity at a time when real actors are still recovering from strikes over job protections, many of which were sparked by fears of AI replacing people.
AI technology is already shaping filmmaking in smaller, behind-the-scenes ways. It’s been used to refine accents, de-age actors, and generate digital doubles. But creating an entirely artificial performer, one that could take real roles, endorsements, and fan bases, crosses a line many in the industry aren’t ready for.
Despite the backlash, Van der Velden isn’t backing down. She says her company plans to launch over 40 AI-generated “stars” through her new venture, Shacoia, which aims to bring virtual actors into films, TV shows, podcasts, and even video games.
The controversy around Tilly Norwood has opened a new chapter in Hollywood’s ongoing struggle with technology. It’s not just about one AI actress, it’s about where the line between art and automation should be drawn, and who gets to decide when creativity becomes code.
