Biography

Fiona Crombie is a world-renowned production designer whose work is celebrated for its tactile, "lived-in" realism and psychological depth. Growing up in a film family, her father a director and mother a film executive, Crombie spent her childhood on sets before training in theater design. She spent a decade as a resident designer at the Sydney Theatre Company, a background that heavily informs her expressive and often anachronistic approach to film sets. Her transition to cinema was sparked by her collaboration with director Justin Kurzel on Snowtown (2011). She achieved global acclaim for Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite (2018), where she used wide-angle lenses to showcase opulent yet oppressive spaces. In 2025, she reached a career peak with Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet. Her "rough and rustic" recreation of the Globe Theatre and the contrasting intimate spaces of Stratford earned her widespread praise and a 2026 Academy Award nomination for Best Production Design.
