James Whyle grew up in the Amathole Mountains of the Eastern Cape. His play about his experiences in the apartheid army, National Madness, was lauded and was performed at the Market and Baxter theatres and published in Market Plays. Whyle has since published poetry, short stories and journalism. James (born October 5, 1955) is a South African writer, playwright, screenwriter, and former actor, acclaimed for his contributions to literature, theatre, and television.

It is 1989, and the struggle against apartheid has reached its peak. The story starts when 16-year-old Otelo Buthelezi, his younger brother, Ntwe, and his best friend, New Year, are invited to the beach house where their new friend's mother is a domestic worker.
