Tom Dean is a rising American filmmaker and screenwriter who has quickly established himself as a poignant voice in contemporary romantic drama. His creative journey is inextricably linked to his partnership with Mac Eldridge; the two met in film school, where they bonded over a shared obsession with cinema—Tom famously aspiring to be the next François Truffaut while Mac leaned toward the sensibilities of John Carpenter. This "literary meets visceral" dynamic has become the hallmark of their collaborative work. Before making the jump to features, Tom spent several years as a working screenwriter for major studios and developed a reputation for scripts that balance intellectual depth with raw, lived-in emotion. To be honest, Tom’s breakout year has been 2025–2026. He made his feature directorial debut (co-directing with Eldridge) with the non-linear romance Charlie Harper, which premiered to critical acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Tom also served as the film's sole screenwriter, a role he navigated with what critics called a "surgical precision" for the subjectivity of memory. Interestingly, he had two films at TIFF 2025; in addition to Charlie Harper, he wrote the screenplay for the indie drama Carolina Caroline.
