Biography

Zoey Martinson is an award‑winning writer and director whose work spans film, television, and theater. Born on the Menominee Nation and having lived in Africa, London, and the USA, her diverse experiences inform her storytelling. As co‑founder of Smoke & Mirrors Collaborative, a nonprofit production company, Zoey creates multidisciplinary works that address social justice issues. The company has produced Off‑Broadway productions, international tours, and digital media projects, partnering with organizations like the United Nations and the U.S. Consulate General. Her feature film debut, The Fisherman, premiered at the Venice Biennale and won UNESCO's Fellini Medal. It later streamed on HBO Max. Zoey has directed and written for various television projects, including Ziwe (Showtime), Uthandiwe (DSTV MzansiMagic), and Betty (HBO Max). Her short films, such as La Oposición and Cupids, have been showcased at festivals like SXSW and Tribeca. Zoey's accolades include the Rauschenberg Artist as Activist Fellowship, the Virginia B. Toulmin Women Playwright Commission Award, and recognition as one of the 18 Women Making Black History by PopSugar.
