This week, we shine the spotlight on a man in the Nigerian film industry who is doing the work, commanding respect, and making an undeniable impact. This Monday, we are celebrating Tunde Olaoye, director, writer, and one of Nollywood's most versatile creative forces.
Tunde Olaoye's passion for storytelling traces back to his childhood, where his grandmother's role as a community mediator introduced him to the dynamics of conflict and resolution, watching disputes presented, escalated, and resolved in her courtyard. That early exposure to human drama would go on to shape one of Nollywood's most thoughtful directors. He was involved in drama clubs during his early school days and later pursued Performing Arts at university, specialising in Writing and Directing.
With well over a decade in Nollywood as a director, Tunde Olaoye's filmmaking expertise has seen his works become household collectables for film lovers. His early work includes the 2012 romantic drama Married But Living Single, starring Funke Akindele and Joseph Benjamin. He has since demonstrated an impressive range across genres, from drama and comedy to biographical films.
Olaoye's most recent project proves he is not slowing down. Singleness is Bliss premiered on September 7, 2025, and quickly got Nigerians talking with its bold stance against misogyny, exploring marriage, cultural identity, and societal expectations. Shot across Nigeria and the United Kingdom, the film features authentic backdrops that reflect the intersection of diverse cultures, starring an ensemble cast including Jide Kosoko, Sola Sobowale, among others. Olaoye's direction strikes a careful balance between cultural depth and contemporary relevance, ensuring that tradition is honoured without overshadowing urgent conversations about equality and empowerment.
Olaoye served as a comedy writer and head writer for Jenifa's Diary, contributing meaningfully to shaping Jenifa into one of Nollywood's most beloved characters. In 2024, that creative partnership reached new heights when he co-directed Everybody Loves Jenifa, a feature film connected to the iconic Jenifa franchise.
Beyond the credits, what makes Tunde Olaoye worthy of the MCM spotlight is his quiet commitment to cinema that means something. Whether he is bringing historical figures to life through biopics or directing socially charged dramas, he consistently chooses stories that entertain and educate. In a landscape that often chases trends, Olaoye builds legacies, one frame at a time.
