After nearly eight years away from acting, Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji is set to make a highly anticipated return to the screen with a lead role in Wahala, an upcoming thriller from BBC Studios.
The award-winning actress, whose last major screen appearance was in the 2018 film Lionheart, will star in the six-part adaptation of Wahala, based on the novel by Nikki May and adapted for television by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko. Produced by BBC Studios’ Firebird Pictures, the series is expected to air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
The drama also features an impressive cast including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, and Susan Wokoma. Set in London, Wahala follows the lives of four Nigerian-British women whose friendships are tested as hidden secrets and painful memories begin to surface.
Speaking about her return, Nnaji shared her excitement about joining the project, describing the story as compelling and expressing her enthusiasm about working with the cast and creative team. Executive producer Elizabeth Kilgarriff also praised the cast, saying the team is excited to bring the characters and story to life.
Nnaji’s comeback has already sparked excitement among fans, especially after years away from acting following the global success of Lionheart, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated films internationally.
