The legend of Queen Moremi Ajasoro is a cornerstone of Yoruba history, a tale of unimaginable sacrifice and strategic brilliance. This April, that legend takes on a new, vibrant life in Ilorin.
In an exclusive sit-down with PartyJollof Africa, MC Asanlu and Wura Nollywood, the creative minds behind the upcoming stage play, The Moxie of Moremi, revealed that this production is far more than a simple history lesson, it is a high-octane emotional journey designed to redefine excellence in Nigerian theater.
At the heart of this production is a mission led by the director, MC Asanlu. Addressing the current state of the arts in Nigeria, Asanlu noted that while Nigerians have fully embraced the cinema culture, stage plays are often still viewed as secondary or "not worthwhile" events.
The Moxie of Moremi is his answer to that skepticism. By hinging the production on absolute excellence, the team aims to whet the public’s appetite for live theater once again, proving that the magic of a live stage can rival, and even surpass the silver screen.
While the production remains deeply rooted in historical accuracy, the director and production manager emphasized that they haven’t been afraid to innovate. The play serves as a seamless merge of the past and the present. Audience members can expect the weight of tradition balanced by modified entertainment elements, including a breathtaking opening scene and contemporary dance routines that elevate the storytelling.
The hallmark of any great tragedy is the cost of victory. The director shared that one of the most anticipated highlights is the moment Moremi realizes the true price of her sacrifice. Recounting a previous showing in Lagos, he noted that this specific scene left nearly half the audience in tears, a rare and powerful feat that sparked conversations long after the curtains fell.
However, it isn't all somber. The production is described as an "emotional rollercoaster." One moment you are immersed in comic relief and laughter, the next you are captivated by rhythmic choreography, only to find yourself gripped by the high stakes of the plot.
Wura, the production manager, spoke passionately about what drew her to the character of Moremi and the production in general. Beyond the crown, she was attracted to Moremi's raw courage. Addressing the historical debate surrounding the Queen's choices, Wura offered a grounded perspective: "Putting myself in her shoes, I might have made the same decision."
The scale of the production is equally impressive. While only six cast members have been publicly revealed so far, the producers teased a massive ensemble of 70 cast and crew members, including 15 dedicated behind-the-scenes staff, all working to sync complex songs, dances, and dramatic performances.
