In the world of Nollywood, success usually leads to more projects, bigger budgets, and a busier schedule. However, BB Sasore, the creative mind behind the critically acclaimed Prime Video Original Breath of Life, is taking a different path. In a recent conversation on ShockNG’s "State of Nollywood Industry Table Talk" (Episode 9), the Nemsia Studios co-founder dropped a bombshell: he is officially done with directing.
Breath of Life was more than just a movie; it was a cultural moment. The film received massive praise for its storytelling, cinematography, and emotional depth. For many directors, such a "critically acclaimed" hit would be the fuel to jump straight into the next big blockbuster. But for Sasore, it appears to be the perfect closing chapter to his directing career.
When asked by the hosts about what projects he has been directing over the last six months, Sasore’s answer was short and surprising: "None."
"I sort of said a comment in passing and people thought I was kidding," Sasore explained during the podcast. "I’m not directing anymore. I’m sort of done after Breath of Life."
While the news might be sad for fans of his visual style, it doesn't mean Nemsia Studios is slowing down. Sasore clarified that the studio has been incredibly busy fulfilling its commitments.
Nemsia Studios has been working through a massive slate of films:
15 Films Total: The studio committed to a large-scale output deal.
9 Delivered: Nine films are already completed and out.
6 in Post-Production: These are currently being edited and finalized.
1 Final Shoot: The very last film of the deal is about to start filming.
Sasore noted that completing this slate would "finish out" their current output deals. It seems his focus has shifted from being behind the lens to managing the bigger picture of the studio's business and production goals.
While Sasore didn't give a single "smoking gun" reason during the snippet of the conversation, his tone suggested a sense of completion. Directing is an exhausting, all-consuming task. By stepping away now, he leaves behind a legacy of high-quality work, capped off by one of the most beloved Nigerian films of the decade.
The industry reaction has been one of shock. Even the hosts of the "Table Talk" expressed their sadness, echoing the feelings of many film lovers who were looking forward to "the next BB Sasore film."
Even if BB Sasore isn't shouting "Action!" on set, Nemsia Studios remains a powerhouse. With six films in post-production and a final one entering production soon, the studio's influence on Nollywood is far from over.
Sasore’s decision highlights a growing trend of "producer-directors" who eventually choose to focus on the executive side of the business to help other filmmakers find their voice. Whether he stays retired from directing or eventually makes a "comeback" years from now, his impact on the industry is already cemented.
