Agnes Lisa Wegner, born in 1976 in Worms, Germany, is a documentary filmmaker and writer based in Mannheim. She studied American Studies and Film Studies in Berlin and African-American Studies at Harvard University. Before venturing into filmmaking, she worked with human rights organizations like Pro Asyl and Forum Menschenrechte. Wegner began her film career in 2007 as part of the research team for Britta Wauer's documentary "Gerdas Schweigen." Since 2013, she has been working as a freelance writer and filmmaker. Her debut documentary, "Goodbye G.I." (2014), co-directed with Uli Gaulke, explored the closure of the largest U.S. Army garrison in Germany. Her work often addresses themes of discrimination, racism, and human rights. Notable films include "No Fucking Ice Cream" (2018), which delves into systemic racism in America, and "King Bansah and His Daughter" (2020), which won the GRANIT – Award for Best Documentary at the Hof International Film Festival. In 2024, Wegner co-directed "The Empty Grave" with Cece Mlay, a documentary examining the legacy of German colonialism in Tanzania. The film premiered at the Berlinale Special section of the Berlin International Film Festival.
