Biography
Cece Mlay is a Tanzanian filmmaker and creative supervisor at Kijiweni Productions in Dar es Salaam. Her work spans directing, writing, and mentoring emerging filmmakers. She co-directed The Empty Grave (2024), a documentary exploring Tanzanian families' efforts to reclaim ancestral remains taken during German colonial rule. The film premiered at the Berlinale and has been recognized for its poignant examination of historical injustices. Mlay also directed Apostles of Cinema (2023) and wrote Nyara: The Kidnapping (2020), both of which delve into social and political themes. Her earlier roles include assistant director positions on Lusala (2019) and Aisha (2015). At Kijiweni Productions, she contributes to various projects, including television and radio shows, and is dedicated to stories that highlight the complexities of humanity within social, economic, political, and historical contexts.
