Azeezat Shorunmu is a Nigerian actress, filmmaker, and prolific screenwriter who has become a staple in the Yoruba sector of Nollywood. A graduate of Mass Communication from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), she honed her acting craft at the Scene One School of Drama, founded by Funke Akindele. In 2025 and 2026, Shorunmu gained significant media attention not just for her roles, but for sharing the tragic origin story of her distinctive, husky voice. In a viral interview (July 2025), she revealed she permanently damaged her vocal cords on the set of the movie Apase years prior. Upon receiving the shock news of the death of a colleague's child (veteran actress Remi Surutu's daughter), she screamed in grief, causing a blockage that resulted in a permanent change to her voice. She has since embraced the raspy tone as her unique signature in the industry. Beyond acting, she is one of the industry's most prolific ghostwriters and screenwriters. She has penned scripts for blockbuster titles including "77 Bullets", "The Return of Kesari", and "Omo Ewekoro". She publicly credited her writing talent as a shield against industry harassment, noting in 2025 that her value as a script doctor gave her leverage and respect that protected her from the "casting couch" culture. Her recent on-screen work includes roles in the action-drama "Machine 2" (2024/2025) and "Omo Ewekoro 2" (2024), where she continues to balance her time between performing and producing for her own production house.
