Biography

Bolu Essien is a Nigerian actress, writer, producer and director best known for creating and starring in the Netflix workplace dramedy Becoming Abi. She also writes and produces film and TV projects, and has appeared in earlier works like Dying with the King (2010), Broken Bridges (2012) and the short films Locked and Things That Broke Us. Becoming Abi is a six-episode series inspired by her own experiences working in advertising, and she plays the lead role of Abi while also serving as creator, co-director and producer. The show was released globally on Netflix in October 2022 and has brought her wider recognition. Essien studied acting at the Identity School of Acting in the UK and leads her creative efforts through Evolving Light Studios. In addition to her film work, she has a professional background in marketing and media and has blended her industry experience with storytelling that resonates with contemporary Nigerian audiences.
