Biography

Daryne Joshua is a South African filmmaker known for his compelling storytelling and commitment to authentic narratives. Born and raised in Cape Town, he began his creative journey at age seven, crafting and selling comics in Bridgetown. He later honed his skills at AFDA, The School for the Creative Economy, graduating with distinction. Joshua co-founded Gambit Films, a Cape Town-based production company responsible for projects like the Afrikaans soap opera Suidooster. His directorial debut, Noem My Skollie (2016), was South Africa’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards and won multiple awards, including Best Screenplay and Best South African Film at the 2017 RapidLion Awards. His second feature, Ellen: The Ellen Pakkies Story (2018), premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and received critical acclaim. Beyond film, Joshua has contributed to television, co-creating Netflix Originals Blood & Water and Unseen. He has also lectured on Cinema and Film Studies at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Joshua’s work continues to resonate for its depth and cultural relevance, solidifying his place in South African cinema.
