Biography
Eleanor Methven is a cornerstone of Northern Irish theatre, known for her sharp-witted and emotionally resonant performances. She co-founded the legendary Charabanc Theatre Company with three other actresses in 1983, a group that transformed the Irish theatrical landscape by focusing on female-led stories and local history. Her stage career has garnered her three Irish Times Theatre Awards, including the Special Tribute Award in 2017 for her monumental contribution to the arts. In the mid-2020s, Methven has become a staple of "Cosy Crime" and period drama. She is currently starring as Lois Dunlop in the BBC Northern Ireland police drama Hope Street, a role she has held since 2024. As of February 2026, she is also receiving widespread acclaim for her guest roles in the 2025/2026 season of How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, the latest project from Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee.
