Sophie Okonedo is an English actress and narrator known for her work in film, theatre and television. Born in London on August 11, 1968, to a British Jewish mother and a Nigerian father, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and began her acting career in the early 1990s. Okonedo’s breakout film role came in Hotel Rwanda (2004), for which she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She has appeared in a wide range of projects including Dirty Pretty Things, Æon Flux, The Secret Life of Bees and Death on the Nile. Okonedo won a Tony Award for her Broadway performance in A Raisin in the Sun and has been recognized with BAFTA and Olivier nominations. She holds the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to drama. Okonedo continues to work across stage and screen, bringing depth and versatility to her roles.
