If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram today, you likely felt the collective surge of excitement from the Nollywood community. The legendary filmmaker Kunle Afolayan just set social media on fire with a single image and a very short, high-stakes caption: "ANIKULAPO series Season 2 coming on 30 January. Are you ready 🕺🏽"
For fans of the mystical, Yoruba-epic universe, this isn't just a release date; it’s a long-awaited relief. Since the first season of Rise of the Spectre left us hanging on the edge of our seats, the question on everyone's lips has been, "When is Saro coming back?" Now we have a concrete date to circle on our calendars.
The comment section of Afolayan’s post revealed how deeply Aníkúlápó has resonated with audiences. Within minutes, the post was flooded with reactions ranging from pure joy to playful desperation.
High-profile creators and fans alike didn’t hold back. KieKie who's also a cast in this season expressed her hype with a spirited "Let’s F!!! Gooooooo!!!", it's also her first epic movie. Mr Macaroni summed up the mood in one word: "Fantabulous!!!" Even Nkechi Blessing Sunday chimed in, telling the "Boss" that she is very much ready for what’s next.
One fan, fabhiedesigns, perfectly captured the mood of the Nigerian audience, commenting, "Over-ready Dey worry us baba mi," while others joked about the timing. the_chubby_ajoke lamented having a major exam around the same time but quickly resolved the conflict: "I can do both na abi😂" proving that for a Kunle Afolayan production, we will always find the time.
The image shared by Afolayan gives us a glimpse into the Netflix interface for the new season. The synopsis hints at even deeper stakes: “After returning from the afterlife, traveller Saro receives an amulet to help him face new challenges. Then, he falls for a palm wine tapper’s daughter.”
It seems the supernatural elements are being dialed up to eleven. With Saro navigating the complexities of the afterlife and the mortal world, Season 2 promises to deliver more of the rich cinematography, cultural depth, and intense drama that has become Afolayan’s signature.
As we head toward January 30, the anticipation is only going to grow. It’s rare to see a sequel or a second season garner this much uniform excitement, but Aníkúlápó has built a unique bridge between traditional Yoruba folklore and modern global streaming.
So, clear your schedules and check your Netflix subscriptions. Whether you're in it for the sprawling landscapes, the intricate costumes, or the sheer chaos of Saro’s journey, one thing is for sure: come January 30, we will all be "SAT."
Are you as ready as the rest of the world? Tell us what you’re most excited to see in Season 2!
Olarotimi Fakunle is easily one of my favorite Nollywood actors right now, and honestly, one of the most underrated talents in the industry.
