Anders Danielsen Lie is a unique figure in international cinema—a "doctor-slash-actor" who maintains a medical practice in Oslo while starring in award-winning films. The son of actress Tone Danielsen, he made his screen debut at age 11 in the title role of Herman (1990). He famously stepped away from acting for 16 years to pursue medicine, only returning when Joachim Trier persuaded him to audition for Reprise. He has since become Trier’s most frequent collaborator, completing the "Oslo Trilogy" with The Worst Person in the World (2021), for which he won Best Supporting Actor from the National Society of Film Critics. In 2025, he appeared in Trier’s Sentimental Value as Jakob, a theater worker and the lover of the protagonist, Nora (Renate Reinsve). During the COVID-19 pandemic, he gained additional respect for serving as a medical supervisor for a vaccination center in Oslo while his films were premiering at major festivals.
