Stellan Skarsgård

Biography

Stellan Skarsgård began his career as a teenager in the Swedish series Bombi Bitt och jag (1968) before spending nearly two decades at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. He gained international acclaim for his collaborations with director Lars von Trier (most notably Breaking the Waves) and his role in Good Will Hunting (1997). In 2025, he delivered what critics have called a career-defining performance as Gustav Borg in Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. He portrays an egocentric, aging film director attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughters while filming a biopic about his own mother. For this role, he won the 2026 Golden Globe and made history by becoming the first actor ever nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for a performance in an international, non-English language film.
