Biography

George Orwell, born Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic, best known for his incisive explorations of social injustice, totalitarianism, and political oppression. Orwell’s early experiences as a colonial policeman in Burma informed his first novel, Burmese Days (1934), and fueled his critique of imperialism. He later gained prominence with works like Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), which offered sharp allegorical and dystopian examinations of authoritarian regimes and remain influential in political discourse today. Known for his lucid prose, Orwell also wrote extensively as a journalist and essayist, addressing issues of class, poverty, and civil liberties. His commitment to truth and social justice, coupled with a literary style that combined clarity and satire, has made him one of the most enduring voices in 20th‑century literature.
