He studied at Stockholm Film School and began his career making short films and commercials, including a celebrated Budweiser Super Bowl spot. Rønning first gained major recognition with the Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated Kon‑Tiki (2012). He followed with big studio productions like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)—his films have grossed over US $1.3 billion worldwide.
