Biography
Makhaola Ndebele is a South African actor, playwright, director, producer, and academic whose career spans theatre, television, and education. Born in exile in Lesotho and later returning to South Africa, he studied drama and English at the University of Cape Town, where he honed his craft in both performance and writing. On stage, he has starred in powerful productions such as Master Harold...and the Boys and The Good Woman of Sharkville. His television career includes memorable roles in Yizo Yizo as Thabang, as well as appearances in Generations, The Principal, Scoop Schoombie, and the British series Wild at Heart. Beyond acting, he has worked extensively as a screenwriter, director, and television producer, shaping both stage and screen with his creative vision. Ndebele also plays a vital role in arts education, serving as an artistic director for institutions such as Joburg City Theatres and currently lecturing at Rhodes University. His acclaimed solo performance Cantos of a Life in Exile—which won a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award—reflects his ongoing exploration of identity, memory, and cultural storytelling.
