Biography

Alice Birch is a powerhouse of contemporary British writing, known for her fierce, structural experimentation and her ability to adapt complex interiority for the screen. Raised in a commune for her first five years, she credits her early exposure to adult debate and constant reading for her "big, sad story" aesthetic. She broke into the mainstream with the 2016 film Lady Macbeth, which launched Florence Pugh's career and won Birch the BIFA for Best Screenplay. Since then, she has become the "go-to" adapter for Sally Rooney's novels (Normal People, Conversations with Friends) and a critical voice in modern television, serving as a story editor for Succession. In 2025, she returned to the stage with her epic masculinity study Romans at the Almeida Theatre. As of 2026, she is preparing for her directorial debut with the feature film Sweetsick.
