Biography
Michael Chaves is an American filmmaker known for his work directing feature horror films, short films, and music videos. He grew up in Southern California and has experience across many roles — director, screenwriter, editor, visual effects artist. He first made waves with shorts like The Maiden (2016), which won Best Super Short Horror Film at Shriekfest. After some early projects including web series and music videos, he moved into feature films. His notable titles include The Curse of La Llorona (2019), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), The Nun II (2023), and The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025). Many of his feature works are part of The Conjuring Universe, produced by James Wan. Chaves has Portuguese roots — his father’s side is from the Azores — and he places value on strong storytelling, atmosphere, and the tools of horror. He continues to develop new projects within the genre, pushing himself to explore both classic horror elements as well as fresh ways to scare audiences, while also maintaining a grounded, character-driven approach.
